Literacy Volunteers of America-Stoughton

Did you know there are Stoughton-area adults who need help developing basic literacy and English skills?  With just 18 hours of tutor training through Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA)- Stoughton and a commitment to meet with a student 2 hours per week at the Stoughton Public Library, you could significantly improve the quality of someone's life while providing an important community service.

LVA-Stoughton trains volunteers as Basic Literacy tutors in preparation for working with American adults with basic reading and writing needs, or as English As A Second Language tutors who assist immigrant adults in developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.  All training materials are provided free of charge to tutors and all instruction is free for students.

Once trained, volunteers are matched with one or more students and meet weekly at the library at a mutually agreeable time during library hours of operation.  As a learner-centered program, tutors are trained to tailor their instruction to meet the needs and interests of their students, which can include:

      Reading to children regularly

      Attending parent/teacher conferences/school meetings

     Reading mail, newspapers and/or magazines

     Speaking English in survival situations

      Reading/using the telephone book

     Reading and writing for cooking

      Using the computer

      Getting a better job

Reading , writing and speaking at their job

If you or someone you know needs help with basic literacy skills or would like to find out more about volunteering with the program, contact LVA-Stoughton at (781)344-2603 or mailto:stlva@ocln.org.
