The Engineering Department provides assistance to property owners by maintaining records of water and sewer service, on site septic systems, and development plans.  The Engineering Department will also provide guidance in drainage matters and other site issues.

The Engineering Department provides support services to other departments and Boards such as the Assessor's Department, Public Works, Town Manager, Board of Health, Conservation Commission, and Planning Board.  The office reviews development plans for the Planning Board and Conservation Commission.  Once these projects are approved, the office periodically inspects the developer’s work to assure compliance with the approved plans.  In conjunction with these inspections, the office periodically makes reports to the Planning Board and recommends bond amounts that serve to protect the town should a developer not complete his obligations.

The Department is responsible for keeping the Assessor’s Maps up to date; preparing easement plans for town utility easements and prepares construction plans, specifications and documents for town construction projects.  The office also keeps up to date the town’s utility plans and does field surveys to determine locations of all water and sewer services for every building in town.

The Department inspects and issues sewer connection permits and inspects water connections for the Water Department.  The office utilizes computers, laptops, surveying equipment, data collectors, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Aided Design (CAD), plotters, digitizers and various software to perform its daily functions.
